Choosing the right lamp is a big challenge especially for beginners in growing CBD hemp plants. In the following article, cbuy.ch explains which lamps are suitable for cultivation and what the advantages and disadvantages of each type of lamp are.

Light is a crucial factor for the successful cultivation of CBD hemp plants. Especially the amount and type of light determines how productive the harvest will be in the end.

Although the natural light of the sun allows CBD hemp plants to grow optimally, many growers opt for indoor cultivation, colloquially known as a “grow room”. Growing in a controlled area indoors offers two advantages: On the one hand, the plants can be grown independently of external climatic conditions. For example, hail damage or pest infestation can be prevented. On the other hand, indoor cultivation makes it possible that the CBD hemp plants can be optimally irradiated with the respective necessary light intensity during the vegetation and flowering period.

Not all types of lamps are equally suitable for cultivation in the “grow room”. In addition, they differ in part significantly in the acquisition costs and in their efficiency. Cbuy.ch presents you in this article the two best types of lamps and their respective advantages and disadvantages.

High-pressure discharge lamps (MH and HPS)
Professional growers in the CBD industry basically work with so-called HID lamps (High Intensity Discharge). A distinction is made between two types of lamps: Metal Halide (MH) and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps.

While the MH emit a cool, blue light, the HPS provide a reddish illumination. MH are therefore particularly suitable for the growing season, HPS for the flowering season. Skilled growers use a combination of MH and HPS because of the different light temperatures.

Advantages:
Compared with other plant lamps, HID lamps are relatively cheap to buy. They are also easy to install and operate.

Disadvantages:
Powerful HID lamps from 600W generate a lot of heat, so there should be enough supply and exhaust air in the annex room. Besides, due to their heavy power consumption, they cause high monthly costs. In addition, their service life is very limited, so they need to be replaced regularly.

LED lamps
LED technology has developed greatly in recent years. Modern LED lamps with more lumens and modern COB technology (chips on board) provide sufficient light intensity even for demanding CBD cultures. Depending on the LED model, this can even exceed the performance of a HID lamp.

Advantages:
LED lamps are very energy efficient. Besides, they produce almost no heat compared to HID lamps. This means that your CBD hemp plants are better protected from heat. In addition, they consume relatively much less power than HID lamps, which leads to significantly lower operating costs.

Disadvantages:
LEDs are sometimes very expensive to purchase. Modern LED lamps in a reasonable size quickly cost a few hundred francs. In addition, LEDs are made from raw materials such as gold, copper or rare earths. Many of these materials cannot be recycled at all or only partially.

Very briefly:
Choosing the right lamp is crucial for successful growing of CBD hemp plants. Experienced growers mostly work with high pressure discharge lamps or LED lamps. Both variants offer advantages and disadvantages. Often, the choice of lamp type also depends on the available budget.
